· 5 min readReducing the need for restrictive practices
How skill-building creates safer, calmer environments.

A central aim of Positive Behaviour Support is to reduce and, wherever possible, eliminate the use of restrictive practices — by understanding needs, building skills and creating environments where people feel safe.
Prevention over reaction
When we address the causes of distress early — sensory needs, communication, predictability, relationships — the situations that lead to restrictive practices become far less likely.
This work is gradual and evidence-based. It focuses on quality of life first, with safety as a natural result of people being understood and supported.
